Introduction

Discover Mons

Mons is a city of 92,000 inhabitants located in the heart of an agglomeration of 250,000 inhabitants. It constitutes the 3ª valloon agglomeration.
Mons is also the district head of the Province of Hainaut and its main administrative and judicial center. It is also a leading university center that comprises more than 10,000 students.
It is finally, the third commercial pole in Wallonia.
In the cultural aspect, Mons has ambition. Consecrated the cultural capital of wallon in 2002, the City of Mons is today a candidate for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2015. Such a goal is not improvised. It’s getting ready. On the other hand, culture is legitimately part of the 5 priority axes of the City Project.
Indeed, since 2000 and with the arrival of Elio Di Rupo as mayor, the city has clearly positioned itself to deserve this title of cultural capital. To carry out this project, the city of Mons has carried out a complete restructuring of its cultural policy in the field of the fine arts, an ambitious, innovative and European policy. An in-depth reflection on its museum policy, in order to offer the culture of Mons an international scope and the opening of numerous workshops of cultural infrastructures have been undertaken in this regard. Some of these projects already finished and operational such as the “Manège”, “La Maison Folie”, the BAM and the “Abattoirs”, etc.
This policy is resolutely based on a network of European contacts and in particular on a particularly strong and original cross-border cultural action since Mons and Maubeuge, a neighboring French city, share the same program in the field of fine arts.
Today, Mons is an open cultural city, of which the central position at the crossroads of Latin and Saxon cultures, a long tradition of diverse contacts at the international level and the realization of original cross-border cultural programs give it true European legitimacy.
